What are Solar Inverters?

The inverter's primary function is to convert DC power supplied by solar panels into AC power, which we use in our homes.

Without one, you won't be able to use your produced solar power, and you will not be able to use the electrical grid stored energy from your battery bank.

Another task the inverter has is to manage the charge and discharge of your battery, ensuring the overall health of your Solar Power or Load Shedding system is in good nick.

Types of Inverters

You have four main types: Grid-Tied, Off-Grid, Hybrid and 3 Phase Inverters.

Each has a specific function and unique abilities.
To learn more about how they work, read our inverter guide.

Inverter Guide

Hybrid

The high quality Hybrid Solar Inverter is the best solar inverter South Africa has to offer. It can be used as a Grid-Tied and Off-Grid solar solution.

Its main advantages include blending energy sources (Solar, Battery & Grid) to make the most efficient system possible.

The blending capabilities of the Hybrid are a guarantee that you are not wasting any produced solar power. They are an excellent investment because of this feature and will see you saving thousands of rands on electricity supplied from the grid system in the long run.

Off-Grid

The classic Off-Grid Solar Inverter has been around for quite some time.

A significant downfall of the off-grids within Solar Power Kits is that if your usage exceeds the amount of solar power you produce, the Off-grid solar inverter will switch over to the grid. Ultimately seeing you waste precious (and free) solar energy.

However, they are more affordable than the Hybrid options and work perfectly in Load Shedding Kits. But, if you want to add solar later, we strongly suggest a Hybrid solution.

Grid-tied

A Grid-tied Inverter allows you to switch between solar and grid power. When solar power is available, it will be used as the primary energy source. But when solar energy is low, it switches to grid power.

Grid-tied systems are ideal for homes or businesses that use most of their power during the day and want to substitute their grid usage with solar energy.

3 Phase

3 phase power supply requires a 3-phase inverter.

If you are looking for a 3-phase Hybrid Solar Inverter but can't find the size you need, you can also use one single-phase inverter on each of your phases. You do not have to have all phases connected to a solar or load shedding solution.

Whatever the application, we have a solution.

Choosing the Right Inverter

Choosing a string inverter for your home or business is your most important decision, and you'll need to have a goal in mind when choosing one.

Hybrids can be used in Off-Grid and Grid-Tied systems. They are versatile, making them the best choice.

If you're planning on adding solar panels to your load shedding kit at a later stage, the Hybrid will be your best bet due to the blending capabilities of these inverters.

If you'd like to supplement your daily grid usage with solar power, a Hybrid is recommended again due to its blending capabilities.

However, if you are on a budget, with no plans on upgrading a Load Shedding Kit to a Solar Power Kit, then an Off-Grid solution will work perfectly for you.

Inverter Prices

As you can see from the listings above, pure sine wave solar inverter prices differ. While the Hybrids cost more than Off-Grids, the Hybrid offers more bang for your buck, which is what you're paying for. Prices also vary depending on the size of the inverter and the brand name.

A quick Google search for solar inverters for sale will give you many options but be careful of choosing the cheapest option available. Do your research and speak to a few solar professionals for advice.

Quality Brands

Brand names matter when you shop for solar equipment.

Reputable brands become firm favourites for a reason, and this is mainly due to the reliability of the product.

Over the years, Solar Advice has stocked and sold many brands, and we have held on tight to the brands that have proven to be reliable. The inverter brands you see in this listing are tried, tested and trusted.

Some of these brands include:

Deye

Deye is a reputable brand, and arguably the best Hybrid Solar Inverter in South Africa and thousands of households and businesses use them. Their best-selling 5kW and 8kW options don't skip a beat, and their price point makes them a firm favourite.

Most Lithium-ion brands are compatible with Deye's range, making them a top choice amongst installers.

In our opinion, Deye inverters are the best solar inverters for both value and quality.
